Dalam keseharian, kita seringkali menerapkan apa yang disebut procedure atau tahapan. Seperti kita mengajari bagaimana sebuah proses terjadi kepada lawan bicara kita. Pernahkah kalian memasak mie instant sendiri, apa langkah awalnya, rebus air hingga mendidih, masukan mie, tunggu hingga matang, tuang ke mangkuk, campurkan bumbu dan terakhir siap untuk disantap. Langkah-langkah atau instruksi dalam membuat atau mengoprasikan sesuatu yang sering kita lakukan tersebut sebenarnya merupakan salah satu contoh penerapan dari Procedure Text. Tidak cuma pada saat membuat mie instant saja, banyak hal lain yang kita lakukan sebenarnya menggunakan penerapan procedure text.

A. Pengertian Procedure Text

Apa itu Procedure Text? Procedure Text adalah salah satu jenis teks bahasa Inggris atau yang biasa disebut genre yang menunjukan sebuah proses dalam membuat atau mengoprasikan sesuatu yang berfungsi untuk menggambarkan bagaimana sesuatu dikerjakan melalui langkah-langkah yang teratur.

B. Tujuan Komunikatif Procedure Text

Tujuan Komunikatif dari Procedure Text adalaha memberikan petunjuk tentang cara melakukan sesuatu melalui tindakan-tindakan atau langkah-langkah yang urut.

C. Struktur kebahasaan Procedure Text

Struktur kebahasaan dari Procedure Text terdiri dari 3 bagian, yaitu:

1. Aim/ Goal (Tujuan)
Pada struktur kebahasaan bagian pertama dari Procdeure Text ini berisi informasi mengenai tujuan dalam pembuatan atau pengoprasian sesuatu.

2. Materials (Bahan-bahan)
Pada bagian ke-dua, Materials terdiri dari bahan-bahan yang digunakan dalam membuat sesuatu. Tapi tidak semua Procedure Text menyertakan bagian materials, adakalanya sebuah Procedure Text tidak memiliki bagian materials.

Ada tiga jenis Procedural Text yang tidak menggunakan bagian materials, yaitu:

1. Procedural Text yang menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu bekerja atau bagaimana cara melakukan instruksi secara manual. Contohnya : How to use the video game, the computer, the tape recorder, atau the fax, etc.
   
2. Procedural Text yang menginstruksikan bagaimana melakukan aktivitas-aktivitas tertentu dengan peraturanya. Contohnya : raod safety rules, atau video game rules, etc.
3. Procedural Text yang berhubungan dengan sifat atau kebiasaan manusia. Contohnya How to live happily, atau How to secceed.

3. Steps (Langkah-langkah)
Pada bagian steps, berisi tentang langkah-langkah atau urutan-urutan yang harus dilakukan agar tujuan yang diuraikan pada bagian Aim/ Goal bisa tercapai. Langkah-langkah atau urutan-urutan tersebut haruslah urut dari yang pertama hingga terakhir. Untuk menunjukan urutan suatu tahapan, biasanya dalam membuat procedure text menggunakan adverbs seperti the first, the second, the third, the last, etc. dan menggunakan conjunctions seperti then, while, etc.

D. Ciri Kebahasaan Procedure Text

Terdapat beberapa ciri kebahasaan dalam Procedure Text, diantaranya yaitu:

1. Menggunakan pola kalimat imperative (perintah), misalnya, cut the carrots into pieces, put the sugar on the cup, boil the water, etc. 
2. Menggunakan action verbs, misalnya cut, put, boil, etc. 
3. Menggunakan conjunctions (kata penghubung) untuk mengurutkan kegiatan, misalnya then, while, dsb. 
4. Menggunakan adverbs (kata keterangan) untuk menyatakan rinci waktu, tempat, cara yang akurat, misalnya for five minutes, 2 hours, dsb. 
5. Menggunakan adverbs (kata keterangan) untuk menyatakan tahapan atau urutan, misalkan the first, the second, the third, the last, etc.
6. Menggunakan simple present.

HOW TO MAKE SAMBAL BALI

Ingredients:
15 shallots, peeled and sliced in half length-way, then finely crosswise sliced
15 bird’s eye chilies, sliced
4 cloves garlic, finely sliced
5 kaffir lime leaves, finely sliced
1 tsp roasted terasi (dried shrimp paste, sere), finely grated
4 stalks lemon grass, only take the white and tender part, bruised and finely sliced
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp freshly squeezed kaffir lime juice
1/4 grated kaffir lime skin
75 ml extra virgin coconut oil
Methods:
Combine all other ingredients and mix thoroughly for a couple of minutes before serving with soy sauce and Sambal Tomat.

HOW TO MAKE SAMBAL BABY POTATO

Ingredients:

• Baby Potatoes – 1/4 kgs
• Whole Dry Red chilies – 6 to 7
• Sambar Onions (shallots) – 5
• Garlic pods – 5
• White vinegar – 2 tsp
• Salt – to taste
• Oil – 2 tbsp

 

Instructions:

1. Heat 1/4 cup water and soak the red chilies in it for 1/2 hour.
2. Pressure cook baby potatoes, peel the skin and keep it aside.
3. Grind together soaked red chilies, sambar onion (shallots), garlic pods, white vinegar and salt together to a smooth fine paste. Do not add water while grinding.
4. Heat 2 tsp oil in a shallow frying pan. Add the peeled baby potatoes and sauté over low flame for 2 minutes. Keep shaking the pan and tossing well, so that the potatoes become golden brown and crisp all around.
5. Add the ground paste to the potatoes and gently mix well with a fork. Cook over low flame, tossing and shaking the pan frequently, while adding the remaining oil from time to time for the ground paste to get cooked.
6. After 10 – 15 minutes of cooking, the raw smell from the paste would have gone and it would have coated the potatoes well. Remove from fire.
7. Serve hot with steaming rice . 

Notes:

1. You can also make this with big potatoes but make sure that you slice them into thick pieces.
2. Roasting the potatoes in the beginning will ensure that they do break and become mushy while cooking.
3. Do not dump the entire oil in the beginning itself as it will make the spice paste to cook very early and will become crisp even before coating the potatoes. So add the oil in stages.

HOW TO MAKE SAMBAL PRAWN WITH BITTER BEAN

Ingredients

• 80ml / 2 3/5 fl oz vegetable oil
• 50ml / 1 1/2 fl oz tamarind juice (assam juice) - mix tamarind pulp with hot water, strain
• 1 tbsp palm sugar (gula Melaka)
• 40 bitter beans or stink beans (petai), peeled
• 1/2kg / 1 pound of medium-sized prawns, shelled
• 6 tbsp / 3 fl oz sugar
• Salt to taste
• Paste Ingredients (to be finely ground)
• 10 shallots, peeled (red onions)
• 30 dried chilies, soaked in hot water to soften and drain
• 1 tbsp / 1/2 fl oz roasted shrimp paste (belacan)
• 1 cup water

Methods

1. Heat cooking oil in a wok, add paste and stir-fry till fragrant and oil begins to appear on the surface.
2. Add in bitter beans and fresh prawns. Then pour in tamarind juice and palm sugar.
3. Cook for several minutes, add salt to taste and water to prevent burning.
4. Dish onto a serving plate when prawns are cooked.
